The late Fr Derry Buckley was remembered at a memorial mass officiated by His Grace peter Kairo,Bishop Maurice Crowley and Bishop Muhatia at the Cathedral Church of Christ the King also present were priest from St Patricks and the Diocese,religious men and women and the Laity.
in his homily Fr Bosco SPS remembered fr Derry as a man of few words who understood his vocation as a missionary priest.”Derry was a society man,organised,capable and faithful to the society.He was a beckon to others,had a great mind and a consummate teacher who invited people to find solutions for their problems rather than doing it for them”.
Fr Derry was among the missionaries recognized by Bishop Muhatia during the diocesan golden jubilee this year as he was was turning 50 in priesthood.
Fr Derry was born in Blackpool, Cork, on the 1st of June 1941. He came to Kiltegan in September 1959 and was ordained on the 14th of April 1968. He spent most of his life as a missionary in Kenya working mainly in the Diocese of Nakuru. Derry had a B.Sc degree from UCC and was very skilled with computers. He was Diocesan Procurator for many years. He also worked in the following parishes: Elburgon, Molo, Kericho and Kituro. He spent a short while on promotion work in Cliffside Park, New Jersey in the early 1990s. Derry died suddenly at the home of his brother Con in Ballinlough, Cork, on Friday the 23rd of March 2018. May he rest in peace.
